Library Access for Current Students

In line with the government’s roadmap, we are pleased to announce that we will be re-opening some student services on campus from Monday 17th May 2021. This means that you will be able to book to come and visit the library and book to come and visit staff members for a socially distanced Covid19 secure visit.  Before your visit to the College in light with the government advice to Higher Education Providers we would ask that you take a lateral flow test, which can be ordered for free from

If you do not take a lateral flow test before you travel, there is a lateral flow testing centre on site which can provide you with a test. Please allow 45 minutes for your test to be processed on site.

You should expect the reception team to ask to see your same day negative result, when you arrive.

Unless you have an exemption you are required to wear a mask in all communal areas and in the library in line with government guidance.

The College is not able to offer any food or drink services at this time, so please bring your own drinks or food onto site.

Every student visit will be recorded for the track and trace system in line with government guidance.

Student services

  1. Library

Monday to Friday the library will be offering two bookable sessions a day.

Session 1: 9:00 to 11.30

Session 2: 13:00 to 15:30

Each session can accommodate eight students only, allowing therefore for 80 different students a week to have access to the library. You will be allocated a set table and we will be asked to work in that specific area. We strongly advise wearing warm clothes as the library windows will be open at all times to ensure adequate ventilation in the space.

Photocopying services will be free of charge.

Times are set specifically to allow Covid19 procedures and cleaning regimes to be maintained and are not negotiable, although you may arrive at any time during your session. You will be asked to leave when the session ends regardless of your time of arrival, as it is imperative that we protect students by thoroughly cleaning between sessions.

Students wishing to drop off books only and not enter the library can do so Monday to Friday 8am to 4pm from Monday 17th May by dropping the books directly to reception.  No appointment is necessary, but the books must be returned inside a bag.

HOW TO BOOK: To book a library session please email or phone 02086530850 stating the time and day you would like to book.  Please do give more than one time you would be available so that the team can allocate you a slot demanding on demand.

Bookings will be processed in the order they arrive by email and phone on a first come first served basis. Initially each student may only request one session until the demand for the service is established.

The reception team will return your email within 1 working day, confirming your time slot. When you arrive at College you must report to reception who will ask to see your negative test result and then give you a visitors page to access the library for your allotted session.

  • Meeting with a staff member

If you would like to book a meeting with a staff member, please email them directly and they will advise you of their availability. Additional meeting pods will be established on the lawn, so that meetings can be booked outside, should you and the staff member prefer.

Please note this programme of events will only be rolled out as long as the government confirm that they are continuing with the roadmap targets for 17th May 2021. If the guidance changes at any time, this programme will also have to change and you will be notified.

Virtual College Conference

College Conference is both the name given to the association of former students of Spurgeon’s College and an actual conference which is held on the second Thursday in June each year. This year, it will be on Thursday 11th June.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, College Conference will not be able to take place as originally planned this year. However we will be offering a virtual experience instead. Please visit the College Conference page to view the programme and to engage with the content on the day.

As part of the day we will be hosting a Spurgeon’s reunion via video link (Zoom*). The reunion is open to all former students irrespective of age, location, or circumstance. We will be breaking people up into smaller batch groups for some catch-up and conversation. Please sign-up in advance if you would like to participate in the reunion:

SPECIAL EVENT: 24 Hours with Charles Spurgeon

Spurgeon’s College is passionate about training men and women for Christian mission, ministry and leadership in the contemporary world. We are also passionate about Charles Haddon Spurgeon, our founder and the most popular Christian preacher in the Victorian world.

At this time of pandemic like all charities Spurgeon’s College is affected financially by the Coronavirus, and therefore we are raising money to continue Spurgeon’s work and continue his legacy so that our students can continue to train and preach the good news of the Christian gospel.

Therefore on Friday 8th May from 9am BST, the College and its friends from around the world will be reading from Spurgeon’s sermons, letters and other works for 24 hours. Through this we want to remind people that Spurgeon’s words are still relevant today whilst raising money to continue Spurgeon’s legacy.

Earlier this afternoon the Prime Minister recommended that people should avoid social contact. Physical lectures tomorrow and for the foreseeable future, therefore, at College are cancelled. This includes chapel and PMP. 

The College will transition to an online delivery of its theological programmes. We will contact students with details of how we intend to achieve this and address some practical concerns.

Counselling students will be contacted tomorrow, but there will not be any counselling lectures this week.

Introduction to Counselling Course

We are now enrolling for the next Introduction to Counselling Course…

The Introduction to Counselling is a 25 hour part time course. It could be useful to you if you are involved in helping others within your church, or if you use counselling skills in your work or you just want to learn how to listen effectively. The next course will begin in March this year.

When is it?

Thursday evenings from 7pm to 9:45pm

March  –5th, 12th, 19th, 26th

April  – 2nd

Easter Holiday

       April – 23rd

       May – 7th, 17th, 21st

How much does it cost?

The course costs £235 per person.

How do I join?

The course is open to all, so simply complete an application form form and our Admissions Department will be in touch.

Listening Conference

200 people have now contributed to our survey and we are hoping to pull wisdom and experience together into one room to help shape new units for the Baptist Union to train missional leaders.

You can help to shape new courses on:

  • Place and Place-making
  • Using Entrepreneurial skills for mission
  • Building Spiritual Resilience
  • Understanding the deconstructionist project and the rise of those who describe themselves as ‘ex-Christian or ‘churchless followers of Jesus’
  • Being and Making disciples away from church structures
  • Understanding Culture
  • Managing Change

Volunteering Opportunity

Learning Support Department

Spurgeon’s College has a Learning Support Department which focuses on enabling students with particular learning needs and difficulties to reach their full potential.

It is staffed by a part-time Learning Support Co-Ordinator, who works with teaching staff to provide support to those students who are identified as needing it most. The Co-Ordinator is assisted by a small team of volunteers who work according to guidelines agreed by the College.

We are looking for additional volunteers to enable us to maintain and expand the service we can offer to students. Volunteers are not expected to be proof-readers, but to work with students in such a way that they can take ownership of their learning and understand how to manage their studies and present assignments effectively in written form. Support can be offered in a variety of ways, for example, through scheduled one-to-one tutorials, drop-in sessions or group workshops.   We are particularly keen on hearing from people who can offer students guidance about how technology can help them with their written work.

We would welcome expressions of interest from anyone who is willing and able to give approximately two hours a week during the teaching semesters, which run from late September to mid-January and mid-February to late May. Ideally you would be able to come into college to meet students face-to-face, but some support (especially for distance learning students) can be given at a distance, e.g. via email or Skype.

We would be glad to hear from anyone who has any experience/training in

  • working with students who have learning needs such as dyslexia
  • teaching English as a foreign or additional language
  • helping students whose mental or physical health affects their learning
  • working with any students in an HE or FE context.

However, you do not need to have such experience/training to be able to offer real help to our students. All you need is a good grasp of the expectations of academic writing, willingness to spend time to understand an individual student’s needs, and the ability to relate to them in a practically supportive way.

Volunteers are invited to the meetings of the Learning Support Committee which are held two or three times a year, and we encourage them to share in the development of our work in this way.

OfS Announcement

Spurgeon’s College is pleased to announce that the Office for Students (OfS), has approved our registration. We are delighted that following this decision we can continue with increased vigour on our core mission to train men and women for Christian ministry.

This decision comes off the back of considerable effort from our staff, Governors and wider family. We would like to thank everyone including our friends in Parliament, the House of Lords and the wider Christian community for their efforts and prayers. 

Spurgeon’s College, one of the UK’s leading Christian Colleges and a Baptist institution with almost 100 years’ history in Croydon, London, has a distinguished and ongoing history of quality theological education. The College has been training Baptist ministers for over 163 years and our alumni are working across the world to support their communities. We thank the OfS for working with us in a constructive way on this matter.

Postgraduate Programme Survey

Recently, the College’s Postgraduate Programme Committee has formed a working group to review our postgraduate programmes and how we might deliver them in the future (residential, online, etc.). Therefore, we are rolling out this short survey to investigate the need and interest of our students, staff, graduates, ministers, potential students and friends of the College.

The survey should take no more than 5 minutes, so we would be grateful if you could fill in this short survey and share it with your friends who may be interested in postgraduate programmes in theology. This survey will close on 11 December 2019.
