The Principal's Introduction

Welcome to our website, I hope that you will find all the information you need to discover more about us, what we have to offer and how we might support you in your learning.

For over 150 years Spurgeon’s College has been helping people learn and equip themselves for their life’s mission as disciples of Jesus.

Founded by the great Victorian Baptist preacher, C. H. Spurgeon, to train pastors who were:

‘… hindered in their efforts to do good by the slenderness of their knowledge … the absence of a guide, their need of books, and their scanty time.’

C. H. Spurgeon set about addressing this need.  Ten years later, the first Principal, George Rogers, concluded that the College was ‘… adapted to the real wants of the age’.  This remains our aim whether you want to prepare yourself for Christian ministry or purely to study the Bible and theology.

Training and forming students for mission and ministry has always been the core work of the College.  For pastors, evangelists, pioneer ministers and church workers we have undergraduate and postgraduate pathways to help you prepare for ministry, or to help you deepen your knowledge, broaden your understanding and strengthen your practice through ‘in service’ training.

Our teaching staff and associate tutors bring extensive experience in ministry along with a high level of academic qualification in their subject specialisms.  The blending of these strengths within the context of Christian discipleship is a key element of our success.

Spurgeon’s is a confessional college, that is, we confess Jesus Christ as our Lord and Saviour.  This is foundational for everything we do.  Christians of all denominations, networks and varieties are welcome to study with us and we are thrilled that our student body is representative of the whole body of Christ from Pentecostals to Anglicans, from large charismatic megachurches to small independent house churches.  This makes for an incredibly rich community life, which is further added to with Christians from black majority, Asian and Latin American churches.

Theologically the College is evangelical, and we are a member of the UK Evangelical Alliance.  Denominationally the foundation of the College is Baptist and we are in membership of the Baptist Union of Great Britain.  Internationally we are committed to mission-based learning, and the College is part of the Micah Network.

It is a privilege to work at Spurgeon’s in a College that has an international reputation for academic excellence, a reputation that is reinforced by the observation of those who scrutinise what we do.

We are particularly pleased that since 2012 the College has been an approved partner of the University of Manchester, one of the top 50 world universities.  Our BA, MA and MTh degree programmes are entirely developed by us, but approved by and leading to degrees awarded by the University of Manchester.  Our research degrees are delivered in partnership with the University of Chester.

Whether it is studying the Scriptures in their original languages, coming to grips with the contemporary world around us through studying ethics or cultural hermeneutics, or developing your gifts and skills as a leader, Spurgeon’s offers you a place to pursue academic excellence in a context that is spiritually grounded.

Spurgeon’s College offers the opportunity to engage in learning at all levels from our Church Training Initiative that is available for a local congregation to courses at undergraduate, postgraduate and research degree levels.

While the range of flexibility varies from programme to programme it is possible to study at Spurgeon’s full-time, part-time, bi-vocationally or as an online learning student in the UK or overseas.

Through their writing and teaching the faculty of Spurgeon’s contribute to the life of the church worldwide.  In addition to this the world also comes to the College.  As a ‘highly trusted sponsor’ with the UK Border Agency, the College is able to welcome international students studying in London on a visa.  Students who are resident overseas can also be part of the wider College community through online study or various of our post-graduate programmes.

If you have any questions or want to know more about studying at Spurgeon’s just contact us or book yourself a place at our next Open Day.  We’ll be glad to help.
