Handover of Historical Document

Thursday, July 19, 2018

On Monday 16th July, Jonathan Bochenski, son of Revd Dr Michael I Bochenski, visited the College in order to handover a document to the Spurgeon archive. The document, a letter written by CH Spurgeon himself, is of important historical significance and we are extremely grateful that it has made its way into our possession.

Dated June 21st 1889, it has particular significance because it describes Spurgeon’s feelings during the immediate aftermath of  the 'downgrade controversy' and is an excellent addition to the other letters in our collection relating to this issue. The recipient of the letter was Douglas Russell, an evangelist and hymn writer. The letter was later found in an autograph album by his granddaughter and passed on to Revd Bochenski, who arranged for it to be donated to our archives.

A small handover ceremony was held, as the letter was passed to Annabel Haycraft, librarian and curator of the Spurgeon archive. Many of our staff were present to witness the occasion, which was followed by a short reception on the College lawn.

Thanks to all those who were involved in the event, especially Jonathan & Michael Bochenski for ensuring that this important document made its way safely to us.
