Appointment of Academic Director

We are very pleased to announce the appointment of Dr Stephen Wright to this senior role at Spurgeon’s College.

Currently Director of Postgraduate Research and Tutor in Biblical Studies and Practical Theology at the College Stephen holds a BA Hons (1st class) in English Language and Literature from Exeter College Oxford, a BA Hons in Theology and Religious Studies from Selwyn College Cambridge, an MA in Religious Studies (distinction) from Lancaster and a PhD in New Testament from Durham.

Stephen has a broad range of experience including as a teacher, Church of England priest, and Director of the College of Preachers. He has been an Associate Lecturer and part time tutor since 1998 and full time with the College since 2009. A widely published author and greatly respected senior academic member of staff he has a range of other commitments, roles and interests both within the College and more widely.

He brings to this key position the breadth of skills, knowledge and experience needed to lead the academic team, engage with our validating universities and to continue to develop Spurgeon’s as a leading theological institution.

Stephen is married to Linda they live in Selsdon. He is due to take up the role on 01 July and will join our new Principal, Prof. Philip McCormack, Director of Ministerial Formation & Training, Simon Jones and Director of Operations, Helen Stokley as the new senior team at the College.

On being appointed Stephen commented ‘It is a great privilege for me to be asked to take on this role at the College. Spurgeon’s is a place which over the years has attracted highly committed staff and students and it will be a joy for me to continue to try to serve them and encourage them to develop their full potential.’
