UNIT DESCRIPTION

Many denominations now have schemes of ministerial appraisal, supervision and mentoring, and ministerial training involves supervised placements and mentoring. This unit seeks to explore current principles and methods, comparing and contrasting Christian and secular approaches. It encourages students to reflect theologically upon their own experiences as givers and as recipients, and to develop the insights and skills that are needed for effective supervision and mentoring.

Aims

To examine critically current approaches to supervision and mentoring, and to evaluate their relevance to the practice of Christian ministry in contemporary society, with a view to developing appropriate skills and guidelines for best practice.

  • critically evaluate current approaches to supervision, to ministerial appraisal and to mentoring
  • outline and critically discuss theological issues raised by the theory and practice of supervision and mentoring

  • identify the knowledge, skills and character required of those involved in supervising and mentoring people training for Christian ministry
  • describe and critically reflect upon their own experience of supervision and mentoring
Practical and transferable skills; personal qualities
  • develop and justify a code of professional ethics for their own ministry
  • develop training programmes for people preparing to be involved in mentoring within the church and community
