UNIT DESCRIPTION

This unit is concerned with Christian leadership with particular emphasis on leadership in a local church setting. Eight themes make up the heart of the unit: Theology, Spirituality, Vision, Team, Culture, Motivation, Change and Mentoring, which all come together, making one story of Christian leadership. Particular focus is on the inner life of the leader, the external environment in which a leader works and the outworking of strategy. Movement will be anticipated in the intellectual, emotional, communal and spiritual lives of students.

Aims

The aim of the unit is to help the students understand the nature of Christian Leadership so that the organisations they lead will flourish.

Knowledge and understanding
  • compare and contrast biblical and theological theories and principles of leadership with those in modern secular literature
  • articulate and defend the distinctive characteristics of Christian approaches to leadership

  • assess and critically evaluate the qualities and functions of the leader in a Christian organisation
  • reflect upon and critically evaluate experiences of leadership and teamwork in Christian organisations in order to identify good practice
  • identify and justify a preferred, personal leadership style
  • develop and apply credible models for understanding how healthy Christian organisations work
Practical and transferable skills; personal qualities
  • identify and use a variety of alternative leadership styles appropriate to a range of situations
