Monday Course

Monday Course - Studying one day a week

Spurgeon's College has always welcomed students who wish to sharpen their skills whilst continuing in employment or ministry. By offering the one day a week course, we help people hone their skills and become even more effective in their Christian service. The course takes place for twenty four Mondays during the academic year (October - May).

All our courses are designed to meet the individual needs of students. We encourage students to talk to our staff about their particular needs and aspirations so that the course curriculum can be tailored to fit their requirements. This personal approach is a key distinctive of studying at Spurgeon's College.

Many of our students find that they can successfully manage working and studying on our one day a week course. These students benefit all of us with their range of experiences. They enrich our community and contribute to the practical nature of the courses.  Others join the course after (early) retirement.

Formal academic qualifications are less important for those wishing to participate in this course. Essential credentials are the ability to cope with the demands of the course, alongside continued involvement in your work, ministry or local church. In addition to attendance at the College, students on average need some eight hours each week for additional study during term time - because the essays need to be written!

The biblical languages are not normally part of the programme of the part-time course because they don't fit into the Mondays students are in College.  If you can be available on other days, we can incorporate Greek, Hebrew or both.

Spurgeon's Award

The one day a week course will provide you with the Spurgeon's College Award after one year and can form the first step towards a full degree over six years. During this year you complete modules on subjects such as Introduction to the Bible, Introduction to Mission and Spirituality. For details of the modules click here.

Certificate in Theology

On successful completion of the Spurgeon's Award, you may go for a further year of study, again attending College on Mondays. The pattern of College work and private study remains the same as for the Award and you may, at the end of the second year, attain the Certificate in Theology awarded by the University of Wales. In this second year you will study modules such Worship and Preaching Skills, Introduction to Christian Doctrine, and Interpreting the Old Testament. For details of the modules click here.

Diploma in Theology

After successful completion of your second year, you may wish to register for two more years on the course to reach Diploma level. The Diploma is awarded by the University of Wales and for details of the modules click here.

Bachelor of Divinity

The Degree of Bachelor of Divinity (University of Wales) can be achieved by attending Spurgeon's College one day a week over six years. Many of our students got there through perseverance and commitment. During the last two years of the course you will not attend College on Mondays but either on Tuesdays or Wednesdays. For details of the modules click here.

These are held on Saturdays in March, May and November and give you the opportunity to meet members of staff and find out more about this course and alternatives. You can discuss your situation without commitment and obtain a good understanding of student life and of the financial implications of coming to Spurgeon's College.

Training to be a Baptist minister

Please note that the one day a week course is not a form of ministerial training. Spurgeon's College does accept students for bi-vocational training but training for the Baptist ministry begins by contacting your regional minister who will give you the necessary documentation to complete. If you are considering training for the Baptist ministry please click here.
