Monday Course

Monday Course - Studying One Day a Week

Spurgeon's College has always welcomed students who wish to sharpen their skills whilst continuing in full-time employment or ministry. By offering the One Day-a Week Course, we aim to help people hone their skills and become even more effective in their Christian service. The course takes place for twenty five Mondays during the academic year.

All our courses are designed to meet the individual needs of students. We encourage students to talk to our staff about their own particular needs and aspirations so that the course curriculum can be tailored to fit their requirements. This personal approach is one of the key distinctives of studying at Spurgeon's College.

Our Philosophy

Many of our students find that they can successfully manage both studying and working on our One Day a Week Course. These students benefit all of us with their range of experiences. They enrich our community and contribute to the practical nature of the courses.

Formal academic qualifications are less important for students wishing to participate in this course. The essential credentials are the ability to cope with the demands of the course, alongside continued involvement in your work, ministry or local church. In addition to attendance at the College, our students have found that on average they need approximately eight hours each week for additional study during term time.

Spurgeon's Award

The One Day a Week Course will provide you with the Spurgeon's College Award after one year and can lead on to a full degree over six years. For details of the degree course modules click here.

Certificate in Theology

After successful completion of the Spurgeon's Award, you may elect for a further year of study, again attending College one day a week on a Monday. The pattern of College work and private study remains the same as for the Award and you may, at the end of the second year, attain the Certificate in Theology awarded by the University of Wales.

Diploma in Theology

After successful completion of your second year, you may wish to work through two more years of the course to reach Diploma level. The Diploma is awarded by the University of Wales.

Bachelor of Divinity

It is possible to attain a Bachelor of Divinity (University of Wales) by attending the College one day a week. Many of our students have achieved just that through enormous perseverance and commitment over six years. During the last two years of the course you will attend on a different day from Monday.

First Year Spurgeon’s Award

During the first year of your course, you will complete modules on subjects such as Introduction to the Bible, Introduction to Mission, Jesus and the Mission of God, and Spirituality.

To complete the Certificate, in your second year, you will study modules such Worship and Preaching Skills, Aspects of Spiritual Leadership in the OT, and the Doctrine of God.

These are held on a Saturday in March and November each year and will give you the opportunity to meet members of staff and find out more about the course. You can then discuss your situation without commitment and obtain a good understanding of what student life will be like and the financial implications of coming to Spurgeon's College.

Training to be a Baptist minister

While not all the students at Spurgeon's are Baptists, or training for the ministry, ministerial training has always been, and remains, at the heart of the College's mission. If you are interested in training as a Baptist minister you should contact your area superintendent or regional minister who will give you the necessary documentation to complete. If you are considering training for the Baptist ministry please click here. Please note that the One Day a Week Course is not a form of ministerial training.
