Master's Courses (MA & MTh)

Spurgeon's College offers no fewer than seven Master's courses, five of which lead to a Master in Theology (MTh) degree and two to a Master of Arts (MA) degree. The MTh in Preaching is offered in conjunction with the College of Preachers. This wide range of opportunities provides for academic interests as well as for the personal development of Christian ministers. For excellent students a Master's degree can be a stepping stone towards doctoral studies (DMin, MPhil, PhD).

Graduate students applying to Spurgeon's College for postgraduate study fall into three categories:

  • those possessing a degree in Theology and seeking accreditation as Baptist Ministers: for them we have the MA in Advanced Christian Studies
  • those possessing a degree in another discipline and seeking a postgraduate qualification in Theology: for them it is the MA in Christian Faith and Practice
  • those with degrees in Theology from this College or other institutions who wish to advance their studies: they can choose from the five MTh courses as well as the MA in Advanced Christian Studies

Whatever is your personal situation, Spurgeon's College has the Master’s course for you!

A successful Master's student said:

'This course is one of the best things I have ever done. I needed something like it in the middle of my ministry to ensure that I make the most effective use of the second half of my service for God.'

If you are a minster in any denomination, your participation will upgrade your initial training and qualifications. You will achieve a higher level of theological awareness and/or reflect on your ministerial practice. The range of courses on offer through Spurgeon's College certainly meets your needs. We will facilitate your understanding of recent developments in church and society, bring you up-to-date with trends in ministry, and/or enhance the application of theology to your own ministerial practice.

Open days

These are held on Saturdays in March, May and November and give you the opportunity to meet members of staff and find out more about the courses. You can then discuss your situation without commitment and obtain a good understanding of studying at Spurgeon's and its financial implications. Duration

The official duration of a full-time master's course is twelve months (two semesters) but students have two calendar years to complete.  Part-time courses, including the in-service courses, take between two and five years.
