MTh in Applied Theology

This course focuses on the interface between academic theology and the day-to-day activities of people involved in various forms of Christian ministry and mission. The MTh in Applied Theology is a supported open learning course, which means that you will learn primarily in your own location. Each module is introduced by a short residential course, and specially designed open learning materials are provided.

The course will make a significant contribution to your in-service training whether you are a Baptist minister or from another denomination. It also seeks to raise the standards of professional practice among Christian ministers. Perhaps even more importantly, it assists in changing the concept of the relation between ministerial training and practice. The traditional view is that the former is simply a platform for the latter. We help demonstrate that learning and development are constant and dominant features of ministerial practice.

Course Structure

The degree is in two parts. Part One comprises various taught modules amounting to a total of 120 credits. You must complete Part One successfully before proceeding to Part Two of the course, which consists of a 20,000 word dissertation. All students must complete the three compulsory modules: Theological Reflection (20 credits); Ministry & Mission in Contemporary Society (20 credits) and Research Methods (20 credits).

A further 60 credits are taken by means of optional 20 credit modules such as:

  • Chaplaincy
  • Christian Leadership
  • Christian Spirituality
  • Church Planting in Contemporary Culture
  • Contemporary Theologies of Mission
  • Issues in Cross-Cultural Missiology
  • Ethics and the Christian Community
  • Preaching – Theology and Practice
  • Theology and Practice of Translocal Ministry
  • Translocal Ministry in Ecumenical Perspective

You should be able to complete all the work for Part One of the course in 18 months. The dissertation takes a minimum of six to nine months to complete, so that the shortest time needed to finish the degree is two years. The maximum time allowed to complete the Master of Theology degree is five years.
