This course focuses on the interface between academic theology and the day-to-day activities of people involved in Christian ministry and mission. The MTh in Applied Theology is a supported in-service course, which means that you will learn primarily in your own location. Each module is introduced by a short residential course, and specially designed distance learning materials are provided.
Over the years, the course has made a significant contribution to students' ministries. This tailor-made in-service training is suitable for Baptist ministers and those from other denominations and it has raised the standards of professional practice among Christian ministers. Perhaps even more importantly, it assists in changing the concept of the relation between ministerial training and practice. The traditional view was that the former was simply a platform for the latter. We help demonstrate that learning and development are constant and dominant features of ministerial practice.
The course has two parts. Part One comprises six 20-credit modules which you must complete successfully before proceeding to Part Two of the course, which is a 20,000 word dissertation. There are three compulsory modules: 740 Theological Reflection; 760 Ministry & Mission in Contemporary Society; and 720 Research Methods. A further 60 credits are taken by means of optional modules:
761 Ethics and the Christian Community
762 Christian Leadership
763 Christian Spirituality
764 Church Planting in Contemporary Culture
765 Contemporary Theologies of Mission
766 Issues in Cross-Cultural Missiology
769 Supervision and Christian Ministry
770 Mentoring and Christian Ministry
771 Parish Nursing
772 Contemporary Issues in Theology
741 Preaching – Theology and Practice
743 The Gospel and Film
Students should be able to complete the work for Part One in 18 months. The dissertation takes a minimum of six to nine months to complete, so that the shortest time needed to finish the course is two years. The maximum time allowed is five years (three for the modules, two for the dissertation).
