MTh in Preaching (with the College of Preachers)

If you are engaged in a regular preaching ministry and wish to develop your skills, this course is specifically designed for you. Offered in collaboration with the College of Preachers, this is the one and only Master's degree in the United Kingdom specifically devoted to preaching. The course is offered on an in-service basis supplemented by short residential periods at Spurgeon's College. If you are interested in improving the quality of your preaching by taking a course that is practical and relevant, then we recommend you take advantage of this unique opportunity. The course leader is Dr Steve F. Latham.

Course structure

The course employs specially designed distance learning materials which are available online. They enable participants to study in their own locality and to learn from their own experience of ministry. The course has two parts and there are no examinations. Part One consists of six modules, of which three are compulsory:

741 Preaching - Theology and Practice

720 Research Methods

 

Three further modules are chosen from the following:

742 The Gospel and Contemporary Thought and Culture

743 The Gospel and Film

744 Interpreting Biblical Narrative for Preaching

745 Narrative Structures for Preaching

746 Preaching - Personal and Corporate Aspects

747 Preaching in Contemporary Worship and Mission

748 Historical Roots of Contemporary Preaching

Part Two consists of a dissertation of up to 20,000 words on a subject related to the modules.

 

Entry requirements and contact information

  • Qualifications for entry to the course will conform to the appropriate regulations of the University of Wales.
  • You will need to have held a position of responsibility relevant to the course for a minimum of two years and have completed a course of training preparing you for that responsibility.
  • You will need to be either a graduate or, if a non-graduate, hold a relevant qualification in theology or religious studies.
  • You will be expected to continue your involvement in some form of Christian preaching ministry for the duration of the course.
  • You must be able to satisfy Spurgeon's College, irrespective of your qualifications, that you have achieved the necessary academic standard to complete the course satisfactorily.
