Master of Philosophy (MPhil)
Roger Standing
Roger Standing was born and brought up in Norfolk within a Methodist family and began preaching at 16. Having met Marion at the Greenbelt Christian Arts Festival, they were married and moved to Liverpool where he took up the post of Evangelist at the Central Hall.

He trained for the Methodist ministry at Hartley Victoria College in Manchester while studying for a theology degree at the University. Then, alongside his first ministerial appointment in Horsforth, Leeds, Roger continued his studies and was awarded an MPhil by the University of Manchester for his research into Hugh Price Hughes and the Forward Movement, a study in historical Missiology.

In 1990 Roger transferred from the Methodist to the Baptist ministry on doctrinal grounds and received a call to become the Senior Minister at West Croydon Baptist Church. In the eleven years of his ministry in South London this multi-cultural church began its work among asylum seekers as well as exploring a diverse range of culturally appropriate strategies to reach the unchurched. It was during his time in London that he began his association with Spurgeon’s College and also studied for, and was awarded, a Doctor of Ministry degree from Denver Seminary in the United States.

Leaving Croydon in 2001 Roger was the last appointed Baptist Union Area Superintendent prior to the changes within the Union in 2002 that saw him become the Regional Minister/Team Leader of the newly formed Southern Counties Baptist Association. Following this time in trans-local ministry Roger joined the staff at Spurgeon’s College in September 2007, teaching in the areas of mission, evangelism and pioneer ministry. He also became Director of Training in 2009 and Deputy Principal in 2011.

Roger has always had an evangelistic emphasis in his ministry with the relationship between Christianity and contemporary culture a particular focus of his concern and wider writing.  He is a member of Norwich City FC and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.

Marion is now the head teacher of a South London primary school and together they have three children and four grandchildren.
